The Church of Archangel Raphael at Old-Dongola

Prof. Wlodzimierz Godlewski

50 years of Polish excavations at Dongola, the capital of the medieval Christian kingdom of Makuria in Northern Sudan – and still we make important discoveries: During the last two seasons we excavated a church with 36 wall-paintings and more than 60 Greek inscriptions. In the beginning of the 9th century AD a synod of all bishops of the kingdom was held in this church. One of the paintings shows the archbishop Aaron, accompanied by king Ioannes II and members of the royal court. After the ongoing restoration these paintings will be a highlight of early Christian art in the Sudan.
